As the DSB Chart shows, people in the three functions convert manufacturer information into outputs needed for their part of the process. These include such things as Specifier guide specs or Contractor submittals or drawings requiring Building Information Modeling (BIM) or CAD support.
CSPECS surveys (and a number of other surveys we’ve seen) confirm that the most common product information resource used by DSB professionals is manufacturer’s websites. Our surveys also tell us that the experience of finding, retrieving and using information from those websites can be very inefficient for site visitors.
Generally, manufacturer web sites don’t focus on providing the information from a holistic DSB standpoint. The holistic approach says that efficiently presented information must be 1) in a standard, consistent format and it must be 2) easy to retrieve and use. On that basis every manufacturer can be placed in one of the quadrants in the CSPECS Product Information Matrix:
