This recent economy has really made contractors of all walks pinch every penny and watch every cost. It was not too long ago that jobs were plenty and work had to be waitlisted. In this new climate though, very few contractors have the luxury of sending extra labor to jobsites or can even stomach the possibility of having a call back for a failed product.
More than ever, quality of new and innovative products must be taken into account to avoid cost overruns. “As always price is a major factor in deciding the correct product for the job, but now we also pay close attention to the exact use for which a product is intended,” according to David Luciano, a Chicago contractor. He also says “We now do our research prior to agreeing to use a specific product that the client may like so as to not disappoint later or to have to spend extra man hours for a customization.” Contractors like Mr. Luciano, who do diligent research before a job starts and lay out to the clients why a certain product may be a better fit for the situation protect themselves from being left holding the bag.
This truly is a make or break economy for contractors. The companies that are prepared and take extra precautions in finding either the correct product for the application or a less expensive similar product will come out ahead in the long run. Also if contractors pinch pennies and streamline costs now, they will have a higher profit margin when the economy turns and the jobs are plentiful again.
